Why Effective Managers Master Their Time Each Week and Every Day at Work
Have you ever delved into the biographies of highly successful individuals, whether in business, like Elon Musk or Steve Jobs, or across various fields such as philanthropy, religion, culture, politics, or sports? If so, you’ll likely notice a common thread—they are masters at managing their time.
Time as an Investment
Time, as we all know, is a finite resource. Each day grants us the same 86,400 seconds. How we choose to utilise this time is entirely up to us. So, what sets apart the world’s most accomplished and efficient individuals? It’s not that they have more time; it’s because they view time as an investment rather than a liability.
During my 7 Pillars of Management training sessions, I often emphasise the critical nature of monthly, weekly, and daily planning—a non-negotiable step before diving into the day’s tasks. Sure, there’s time for morning greetings and casual conversations, but once you’re at your desk, resist the temptation to immediately delve into emails. Instead, start your day by planning.
Let’s revisit the five-step plan:
- Clearly define your goals for the end of the month.
- Review the previous day’s tasks.
- Preview the next couple of days.
- Check your calendar and new emails.
- Prioritise your to-do list, focusing on the most crucial tasks first.
If you’re already a time management master, this lesson might not be groundbreaking for you. However, if you find yourself perpetually short on time, consider delving into podcasts, reading books, and learning about effective time management strategies.
