What are the 3 Management Perspectives and Why are They Important?
In this article, I want to emphasise the importance of your three management perspectives. In Pillar number one of the 7 Pillars of Management, I previously discussed these three perspectives, emphasising that many managers only focus on their immediate tasks. However, effective managers understand that there are three key perspectives to their role.
- Strategic Perspective. This perspective involves knowing what needs to be accomplished over a 12-month period, typically from July through June of the following year.
- Tactical Perspective. The tactical perspective is your monthly view. It requires you to start each month knowing what your team must achieve by the end of that month.
- Operational Perspective. The operational perspective entails understanding what needs to be accomplished by you and your team at the end of the week and even by the end of the day, particularly on Monday mornings.
I’d like you to focus more on your tactical perspective. Take a look at your calendar. What is the date? How many days have passed since the start of the month? How many days are left in the month?
Here are some questions to ponder:
- Did you invest time at the end of the previous month to plan and prepare for the current month?
- Did you sit down with your team, especially those who report to you, to share your goals and objectives for this month?
- Have you asked each of your team members, particularly those in supervisory or team leader roles, to share their goals for the month?
- Have you displayed your major goals in a visible area, like a whiteboard or poster, for everyone to see and refer to each day and week?
- When you meet with your key team members, do you incorporate your monthly goals into your discussions?
To enhance your effectiveness as a manager, focus more on thinking tactically—prioritising what must be achieved in the upcoming month.
Put these ideas into practice. I look forward to sharing more insights with you in the next article.
